Dear Reader, Get ready for a sobering statistic: Up to 20% of new moms struggle with postpartum depression or anxiety. This means one in five mothers of our grandchildren is grappling with mental health issues. At the same time as adjusting to the demands of becoming a parent! Becoming a parent is a hard enough transition as it is, without the added stress of a postpartum mood or anxiety disorder. Grandparents are perfectly positioned to help: We have the experience and perspective to spot symptoms that parents are ignoring. Symptoms such as:
If we suspect that our daughter or daughter-in-law is struggling, what do we do? Talk first with their partner, asking if they’ve observed the same thing. Together you can come up with a support plan. Grandparents can provide practical support, like helping with meals and household tasks. We can provide emotional support, by being there to listen and validate parents’ feelings. And we can provide financial support for therapy or household help. There’s another thing we can do: help parents find professional help. Caring for a newborn is the worst time to try to find a therapist who is accepting new patients and takes your insurance. (If you even have insurance!) I’ve recently learned about a new mental health support model for new moms. Prospera is a maternal mental health platform created for moms by psychologist moms who get it. They offer one-on-one coaching for mothers struggling with postpartum depression, anxiety, and rage. Their actionable coping tools are specialized for motherhood, and their affordable model makes Prospera more accessible than traditional therapy. If you want to learn more about their approach, I’ll be going live on Instagram with the founder today at 1pm Pacific time. Or visit their website —they offer free consultations. You might not need this information right now. But bookmark their website, because it could be very useful in the future. Warm regards, P.S.
